Gestures and activities to utilise with the "What Tin You lot Exercise?" song

The actions to this vocal are simple – simply practise each action as they come up up in the song.  Information technology'due south probably best for everyone to do the actions on the spot otherwise things could get a scrap hectic!

Using the "What Can You Do?" song in class

This song is great fun – your students will dear doing all the actions as they sing it.  It tin even be used a simple free energy burner when your students get over excited or restless.  Information technology is too a great manner to acquire the patterns "Can you …?" and "I tin …".  This lesson works well as a follow up to pedagogy the actions vocab in a preceding lesson.  However, we'll treat this lesson equally the first time the action vocab has been introduced to your students

  1. Teach the actions vocab. Get-go with flashcards of the actions in the song (spring, run, swim, hop, stomp my feet, turn around) – nosotros take these deportment flashcards available for printing hither:

    Actions flashcards
    Exercises flashcards

Have all your students stand up and pull out the get-go flashcard (e.yard. "Bound").  Get the students to do the action as soon as you reveal the menu. Shout out the word as you are all doing the action and encourage anybody to shout the word as well. Do this for all half dozen cards.

  2. Play "Quick flashcard actions". Lay the flashcards face downward on the footing and mix them up.  With your students still standing, quickly turn over one card for all to see and shout out the action (eastward.thousand. jump).  Everyone jumps for a second or two.  Then turn over another card and shout the activeness for everyone to do. This should be quick paced with deportment irresolute frequently.  After a few rounds mix the cards up again and choice up one card.  This time don't show it to anybody – look at it yourself and and then shout out the give-and-take (eastward.one thousand. "Run!) and see if everyone does the right activeness.  If they are having bug show the carte.  Do this for all of the cards until everyone is getting the actions right.
  3. Play "Instructor Says". This is the game "Simon Says" simply using the word "instructor", or your name, instead. Get straight into the game (no explanations necessary) by saying "Instructor says (jump)".  Do the action and make sure everyone else follows along.  Do a few more "run, plow around, swim, etc." And then at some point requite a command without the "Teacher says" office (east.one thousand. "Jump!"). Start time round, everyone volition jump, and then make it very clear that they shouldn't exercise this when you don't say "Instructor says".  Later a while your students will become the hang of it.  Play the game faster and faster.  When a student makes a error they have to sit the rest of the game out.  The last student continuing is the winner.
  4. Teach "Can yous ..?", "I can …". Accept out two more flashcards for the actions "fly" and "ride a cycle".  Have all your students sit downward.  Pull out the "Bound" flashcard.  Say "I tin can jump" – signal to yourself and nod your head.  So jump and again say "I tin spring".  Do the same for some other flashcard (e.g.run).  Then pull out the fly flashcard.  Look surprised and shake your head, proverb "No. I tin can't fly".  Motion trying to fly merely falling on the ground.  Yous can also enquire some students "Can you fly?" – some are bound to say "Yes", merely look shocked and say "No.  No I don't think so.".  Next do a few more than deportment (turn around, hop) then pull out the "ride a bike" flashcard.  Again, say "I can't ride a wheel" and motion trying to but falling off. And so terminate with the remaining flashcards (you tin can cull whether to say you can or tin can't swim).

Now, pull out a flashcard (e.g. hop) and say to the course "Can y'all hop?". Encourage everyone to say, "Yes, I tin hop" and show yous how.  Do this with all of the flashcards – try and encourage some to say they can't practice some actions (e.chiliad. ride a bike, swim and especially fly!).

  5. Sing the "What Can Y'all Do Song". Place the flashcards on the board in order of the song, or pin upwards the "What Can You lot Exercise?" song poster. Play the vocal and sing along – encourage anybody to sing and do the deportment with you. For the first time you use this song, play it a couple of times.
  6. Exercise a "Tin can you / I can worksheet". To finish off this section of the lesson, requite out worksheets which take the vocab from the song.  As your students are doing the worksheets, ask questions (eastward.g. "What is this?", "Tin you swim?", etc.).  You can besides give a worksheet for homework.
